Copeland was formed by Aaron Marsh and James Likeness in Florida, United States in 2001. Later, Bryan Laurenson and Jon Bucklew joined the band as well.

Copeland signed a recording deal with The Militia Group which released the band's debut album "Beneath Medicine Tree" in March 2003. The album was produced by the band with Matt Goldman as a co-producer. To record the album, the band relocated themselves to Atlanta.

Their second album "In Motion" which was released in March 2005 debuted at number 115 on Billboard's Top 200 chart.

Between the release of albums "Beneath Medicine Tree" and "In Motion", the EP "Know Nothing Stays the Same" was released.

In 2006 it was announced that Columbia Records had signed Copeland. After all, this relationship did not last very long and the band announced in September 2007 that they had split ways with Columbia Records.

Where all the previous albums of the band were published under The Militia Group, the album "You Are My Sunshine", which ultimately became the last album of the band, was released by Tooth & Nail label. "You Are My Sunshine" was released in October 2008 and it was produced by Aaron Sprinkle and Aaron Marsh.

On the October of 2009 the band officially stated that they would disband after their farewell spring tour in 2010. The last tour took them to Asia including countries like Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.
