The band's name Mae, is an acronym of words "Multi-sensory Aesthetic Experience". It is based on a university course of band's drummer Jacob Marshall and means "the study of sensation, perception, emotion and meaning in art and music".

The first track ever written for the band was "Embers and Envelopes" which was made in the living room of Jacob Marshall's apartment even before the whole band existed by Marshall and bass player Mark Padgett. Soon after these recording sessions, the duo became a quintet.

Band's first two albums were recorded under Toot & Nail record label. Before the release of their third album "Singularity", the band signed a major record deal with Capitol Records. "Singularity" was produced by Howard Benson who had previously been producing artists like "Relient K", "Saosin" and "My Chemical Romance".

The band parted ways with Capitol Records on September 2007 and eventually returned to Tooth & Nail although only the distribution of albums were under Tooth & Nail's responsibility. This year saw also departures of Padgett and Rob Sweitzer from the band.

Although distributed by Tooth & Nail, band's last three recordings (m)orning, (a)fternoon and (e)vening were released by band's own record label Cell Records.

Before disbanding, Mae played their last live shows on February 2011 in Japan. This ended also their farewell tour where Sweitzer and Padgett had returned on stage with the band.
