Rev Theory was formed at North Andover, Massachusetts, United States in 2002 by guitarist Julien Jorgensen, drummer Dave Agoglia and vocalist Rich Luzzi. About a year later the bass-player Matt McCloskey joined the band as well. At first the band was called Revelation Theory. The name was shortened after the release of their debut album.

In September 2005, Rev Theory (known as Revelation Theory back then) released its debut album called "Truth Is Currency". The album was released via Idol Roc Entertainment and it was produced by Paul Ebersold and Kyle Kelso. The tracks "Slowburn" and "Selfish And Cold" were released as singles.

In 2007, the band appointed Rikki Lixx as their solo guitarist.

"Light It Up" is the first album of the band released as Rev Theory. It was released by Interscope in June 2008. Brian Howes, Steve Ferraro and Steve Glazer produced the album. The album spent five weeks on the US Billboard Album chart peaking at number 74.

The third album of the band was released by Interscope in February 2011 and it was called "Justice". The title track "Justice" was the first single released from the album. The album peaked at number 75 on US Album chart.
