The Album Leaf is a solo project of Jimmy LaValle and it was founded in San Diego, California, United States in 1998.

Until 2003, Jimmy LaValle was also a guitarist of post-rock band Tristeza, but nowadays he is only an occasional member of the band. LaValle has also played in several other band in the Sand Diego area.

The debut album of The Album Leaf called "An Orchestrated Rise to Fall" was released under The Music Fellowship label in 1999.

The Album Leaf played its first official concert in winter 1999 at Che Cafe, which is a live music venue in University of California, San Diego. The concert was played as a band with LaValle's fellow musicians from his previous bands. They played their second show in Tristeza's tour in Austin, Texas in spring 2000.

The Album Leaf's second album was called "One Day I'll Be on Time" and it was released in May 2001 under Tigerstyle label. The album caught the attention of Jón Þór Birgisson, a member of Icelandic band Sigur Rós. Birgisson asked The Album Leaf to be a supporting act on Sigur Rós' becoming US tour.

The next three The Album Leaf albums "In A Safe Place", "Into the Blue Again" and "A Chorus of Storytellers" were all released under Sub Pop recording label. The latter of them was released in 2010 and it was co-mixed by Jón Þór Birgisson.
