The Avett Brothers was formed in 2000 at Concord, North Carolina, United States. The band was formed by brothers Seth and Scott Avett accompanied with guitarist John Twomey from the band called "Nemo" where all the three had played earlier. All the three also kept playing in "Nemo" until its broke up.

The first release of the band was their self-titled EP which was released independently in April 2000 and contained six tracks.

The debut full-length album of the band called "Country Was" was released in January 2002. The album was again released independently. Some time before the release of the album bass-player Bob Crawford joined the band as well.

"A Carolina Jubilee" is the first album of The Avett Brothers released under Ramseur Records. The album came to record stores 19th of August 2003.

"Emotionalism" released in May 2007 was the first album of the band to reach the US Billboard 200 Album chart peaking number 134 and spending two weeks on the chart.

"I And Love And You" was released in September 2009 under American label and was produced by Rick Rubin who has earlier worked with artists like "Metallica", "Linkin Park", "Neil Diamond" and "Dixie Chicks". The album was the most successful so far spending 28 weeks on the Billboard 200 Album chart and peaking number 16.
