The Cataracs was formed in Berkeley, California, United States in 2003 by David-Benjamin Singer-Vine and Niles Hollowell-Dhar. The two had met in Berkeley High School. The name of the band is taken from "Snoop Dogg's" song "What's My Name, Pt. 2".

After finishing high school both of the musicians went to university but both soon realized that if they were to make a career in music, they should leave school. Both did so.

The debut album of The Cataracs was published under Cyrano recording label in 2006 and was called "Technohop Vol. 1".

The sequel of their debut album was called "Technohop Vol. 2" and it was released in 2007, again under Cyrano label.

In April 2010 The Cataracs featured as producers on "Far East Movement's" single "Like A G6". The track also featured "Dev" and it was widely recognized and spending 26 weeks on the Billboards Hot 100 list peaking at number 1.

The Cataracs produced "Snoop Dogg's" track "Wet" made for Prince William's bachelor party. The track was featured on "Snoop Dogg's" album Doggumentary released in March 2011.

All The Cataracs albums published so far are released only in digital download format. None of the band's albums has reached the US Billboard 200 album chart.
