The Civil Wars was formed by singer-songwriters John Paul White and Joy Williams at Nashville, Tennessee, United States in 2009.

The first recording of the duo was released in June 2009 and it was a live album consisting of nine tracks and a demo of the song "Falling" as a bonus track. The album was released only on the artist's website as a free download.

"Poison & Wine" is the first studio recording of The Civil Wars. It was released via Sensibility in November 2009. Grammy-winning producer Charlie Peacock produced the album. The title track of the album was used on episodes of TV series "Grey's Anatomy", "Pretty Little Liars" and "90210". The tracks was also featured on the soundtrack of the movie "Something Borrowed".

The Civil Wars released its debut full-length studio album "Barton Hollow" in February 2011 via Sensibility. The track "Barton Hollow" was released as a single in January 2011. A music video of the track has been filmed as well. The album spent 18 weeks on the US Billboard Album chart peaking at number 12. In the UK, the album peaked at number 54 on the album chart.
