The Exies was formed in 1997 at Los Angeles, United States when Scott Stevens asked Thom Sullivan and Freddy Herrera to found a band with him.

The name, The Exies is taken from John Lennon biography. The band has stated that it was the only Beatles-related word that had not been used so far. John Lennon had used the word as an abbreviation of "the existentialists" while The Beatles was touring in Germany in the 1960s.

The self-titled debut album of The Exies was released by Ultimatum Records in March 2000. The album was produced by Stephen Haigler.

In 2002 The Exies signed the a major recording deal with Virgin Records. Virgin then went on to release the band's second album "Inertia" in January 2003. "Inertia" peaked at number 115 in US album charts. "Inertia" is their only album so far to be listed on Billboard's Top 200 album chart.

The band's third album, which was produced by Nick Raskulinecz and was called "Head for the Door" was released in November 2004 under Virgin Records. The first single of the album was "Ugly" and it received a notable amount of radio play.

"A Modern Way of Living with the Truth" is band's forth album released in May 2007. The album is their first album released by their new recording label Eleven Seven Music. The album was produced by James Michael who has been working with artists like "Saliva", "Papa Roach" and "Alanis Morissette".
