The Faint was formed in 1995 at Omaha, Nebraska, United States. The original members of the band were bassist Joel Petersen, drummer Clark Baechle and vocalist and keyboardist Todd Fink. At first the band was called "Norman Bailer".

"Sina Sierra" is the debut album of The Faint, although the name of the band back then was still "Norman Bailer". The album was released in 1995 by Lumberjack Records.

The first album the band released as The Faint was "Media". The album came to the record stores in March 1998 and it was released via Saddle Creek Records label. A.J. Mogis was the producer of the album.

"Wet from the Birth" released in September 2004 is fourth studio album of The Faint and it was the first one to reach the US Billboard 200 Album chart. The album spent two weeks on the chart and peaked at number 99. The third track of the album was used in the video games "Tony Hawk's American Wasteland".

In August 2008, the fifth album of the band, "Fasciinatiion" was released by blank.wav label. The album reached the 46 position on US album chart but spent only two weeks on the chart.
