The Format was founded by multi-instrumentalist Nate Ruess and vocalist Sam Means at Peoria, Arizona, United States in 2001.

"Interventions + Lullabies" is the debut album of The Format and it was released by Elektra Records in October 2003. R. Walt Vincent produced the album containing twelve tracks. The first single of the album was called hilariously "The First Single (You Know Me)".

In July 2006 was released the second and the last studio album of the band. The album released by The Vanity Label and was titled "Dog Problems". It was produced by Steven McDonald. McDonald played the bass on the album as well. "Dog Problems" reached the TOP100 on US Billboard 200 Album chart peaking at number 77 and spending two weeks on the chart. The tracks "The Compromise", "Dog Problems" and "She Doesn't Get it" were released as singles.

In November 2007, The Vanity Label released a compilation album which contains eighteen tracks. The compilation was called "B-Sides & Rarities".

It was announced in 4th of February, 2008 that The Format would stay on hiatus for an undefined time.
