The Hold Steady was formed in 2004 at New York City, New York, United States by guitarist and vocalist Craig Finn, guitarist Tad Kubler, bassist Galen Polivka and drummer Judd Counsell.

The band's debut album is called "Almost Killed Me" and it was released in March 2006 via Frenchkiss record label. In their list of 100 Best Albums of the Decade, The Rolling Stones Magazine ranked the album at number 99.

"Boys And Girls in America" released in October 2006 is the third album of the band and it was the first one to reach the US Billboard 200 Album chart peaking at number 124 and spending two weeks on the chart. In UK it reached the 84 spot on album chart.

In July 2008, the fourth album of The Hold Steady was released by Vagrant and Rough Trade record companies. The album was called "Stay Positive" and it was produced by John Agnello. The album spent six weeks on charts in US and peaked at number 30.

The fifth album "Heaven Is Whenever" released in May 2010 sold 23,000 copies in the week it came to record stores. The album peaked at number 26 on US album chart.
