The original line-up of The Kooks met each other in Brighton Institute of Music. They all shared an interest in the music of "The Police", "The Rolling Stones", "David Bowie" and "Bob Dylan".

The band's is taken from David Bowie's song Hunky Dory.

The band got their first gig only because the manager liked their hats. Unfortunately the gig never happened because the band were finishing their first demo at the time.

The Kooks got their record deal with Virgin Records just three months after the whole band was founded.

The Kooks developed and improved their style and sound by touring, before their first album "Inside In / Inside Out" was even recorded and released. Their first tour was as a supporting act for "The Thrills".

Their first album was released exactly the same day as the "Arctic Monkeys'" debut album Whatever People Say I am, That's What I'm Not.

In the end of January 2008, the bass-player Max Rafferty leaved the band. The first candidate to replace Rafferty was Dan Logan, but eventually Peter Denton was appointed as a new bass-player.

The name of their second album "Konk" refers to the name of the studio the album was recorded at. The album reached the 9th place on UK album chart only one week after it's release.

Late in 2009 the drummer Paul Garred had to leave the band due to health problems in his hand. Chris Prendergast later took his place.
