The Pains of Being Pure at Heart was formed at New York City, United States in 2007. The founding members of the band were drummer Kurt Feldman, bass-player Alex Naidus, guitarist and vocalist Kip Berman and keyboardist Peggy Wang-East.

The band's self-titled debut album was released by Slumberland Records in February 2009 and it received a lot of attention in music magazines and on the internet. The first single of the album "Everything with You" was released in November 2008. The album was produced by the band itself and it peaked number 9 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart.

"Belong", their second album was released in March 2011. It was released by Slumberland in the US and by Play It Again Sam in the UK. The album spent two weeks on the Billboard's 200 Album chart peaking number 92. The album was produced by Grammy-winning producer Flood, who has previously worked with artists like "U2", "The Killers", "Depeche Mode", "The Smashing Pumpkins" and "PJ Harvey".

The band has made two EPs called "The Pains at Being Pure at Heart EP" which was released in 2007 and "Higher Than the Stars" released in 2009.
