The Spill Canvas was formed in 2005 at Sioux Falls, South Dakota, United States by Nick Thomas and at first it was a solo project for him. At time time, Thomas was also the vocalist and guitarist of a band called "Nodes of Ranvier".

The first album of The Spill Canvas was called "Go for the Jugular" released in 2002.

The album "Sunsets and Car Crashes" is the second album of The Spill Canvas was released in April 2004 by 111 Records label. Nick Thomas recorded almost everything for the album by himself.

Soon after the release of "Sunsets and Car Crashes" The Spill Canvas became a full band when Joe Beck, Brandon Aegerter and Ross Wheeler joined the band. This line-up didn't last long and soon Scott McGuire and Dan Ludeman replaced Aegerter and Wheeler.

The fourth album of the band called "No Really, I'm Fine" released in October 2007 is the most successful of their albums so far. The album peaked at number 143 on US Billboard 200 Album chart although spending only a week on the chart. The album was produced by Neal Avron and it was released by Sire Records.
