The Trews was formed at Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1998. The band was formed by brothers Colin and John-Angus MacDonald, their cousin Sean Dalton and a good friend Jack Syperek.

At first, the band was called "One I'd Trouser", which is a line from Monty Python movie "The Meaning of Life". Later they changed their name to The Trews, which was suggested by their fan and is a name of traditional Scottish pants.

The band won a band competition called Rock Search in the summer of 2002 and soon after that signed a recording deal with Sony BMG.

Before winning the competition, The Trews had already released two EP albums under Bumstead Recording. "The Trouser E.P." was released in 1997 and "Trews E.P." released in 2002.

The first full-length album of the band was released in August 2003 and it was called "House of Ill Fame". The album is certified gold in Canada. A music video was filmed for the track "Not Ready to Go".

The band's third album "No Time for Later" released in February 2008 was the first album for them to reach TOP5 in Canadian album chart. The album spent two weeks on the cart and peaked at number 4. The first single of the album was track called "Hold Me in Your Arms" released in November 2007.
