Thriving Ivory was founded in 2002 at Santa Barbara, California, United States by pianist Scott Jason and vocalist Clayton Stroope. They became a full band when drummer Paul Niedermier, guitarist Drew Cribley and bass Bret Cohune joined the band as well.

Abel Tesfaye is the singer behind the stage name The Weeknd. He was born at Scarborough, Ontario, Canada in February 16th, 1990.

The band's self-titled debut album was originally released in May 2003 and then re-released in June 2008 by Wind-Up Records. The album was produced by Howard Benson and Chris Manning. The album almost reached the TOP100 of US album chart peaking at number 102 and spending 15 months there. "Angels on the Moon" was the first single of the album and it received gold certification in the US after selling over a half a million copies.

The first time wider audience heard about Tesfaye was in late 2010, when he uploaded three songs in to internet video service YouTube. The songs were "The Morning", "Loft Music" and "What You Need".

"Through Yourself & Back Again" is the second album of Thriving Ivory and it was released in September 2010 by Wind-Up Records. The album peaked at number 2 on Billboard's Heatseekers Album chart but did not reach the TOP100 on Album chart peaking just at number 131 and spending only a week on the chart. The track called "Where We Belong" was released as single. Roman White directed a music video of the same track as well.

The debut album of The Weeknd was actually a mixtape and it was released in March 2011 and was called "House of Balloons". The album was released under The Weeknd's own record label OVOXO. As producers on the album were featured Doc McKinney, Illangelo and Zodiac. Pitchwork.com website gave its "Best New Music" award to "House of Balloons" album. The album is the first part of an album trilogy.

"Thursday" is the second part of The Weeknd's album trilogy and it was released in August 2011. As well as its predecessor "House of Balloons" was released under the own label of The Weeknd called OVOXO. Don McKinney and Illangelo produced the album. On the track called "The Zone", Canadian rapper Drake is featured as co-vocalist.

Both two mixtapes of the trilogy are only released as digital downloads.
